Is your group collaborating with other groups? Are there related parent or child groups? Are you part of any networks? This is the place to set up those connections!
Hylo allows group creators to set up a nested group structure that reflects how your group is organized in real life. For example, you can set up a main group that contains several working groups as subgroups nested within the main “Parent” group.
To view the groups that are connected with your group, click the Groups tab in the lefthand navigation. You will see a network map and a list of "Parent Groups" and "Child Groups". These terms describe the nesting relationship and are not really meant to imply provenance. A Parent group is a containing group that the current group is a part of. A Child group is a subgroup of the current group or a member of a network that group represents. An example is a global student group with regional chapters. The main group hub is the parent group and the chapters are the child groups.
To create a nested subgroup, click the Create button in the top left when viewing the group within which you want to create the subgroup. Then click Create Group. This will open a form where you can add the group name, preview the URL slug, set privacy settings, and add a purpose for the subgroup. In "Is this group a member of other groups?" the current group will already be selected (only if you are a steward of the group). Click Create Group.
As a group steward, you can manage connections with other groups in the Group Settings. Click Related Groups to see the list of Parent and Child groups that you are already connected with.
You can request to join your group to another group. The moderators of that other group will have the ability to approve or deny your request to link your group.
You can invite another group to join your group. They will be able to accept or deny your invitation.
For existing group connections, you can click the three dots and Leave Parent or Remove Child to remove the connection.
Adding a new group relationship, peer groups, is on our product roadmap. A peer group relationship would be a more casual link than a nesting relationship, that could indicate the groups are aligned and working together but not necessary part of one or the other.
